I Love a Man in Uniform: Review

by Lily Burana

From Publishers Weekly

A former stripper, Burana (Strip City) married a major in the U.S. Army and records, in this heartfelt though long-winded confessional, her attempts to render their two very different worlds compatible. Burana enjoyed a decidedly checkered past, from accidental teenage communist to peep-show girl and stripper in New York and San Francisco (she fondly recalls her Playboy shoot), before meeting Major Mike at a ceremony in a Brooklyn cemetery in 2000. She was attracted by his sense of order and honor, even charmed by his military jargon, while he admired her rebelliousness, though these same qualities would challenge their relationship over time. Living together in a condo near Fort Meade, Fla., where Mike was stationed, segued into a quick marriage (she called herself a War on Terror bride), before he was deployed to Iraq for six months in 2003, creating for her a painful personal trial of waiting and self-discipline. Their move to West Point underscored her new role as military wife, and she embarked on a gloomy, unstable period of psychological turmoil requiring therapy and medication for her own brand of post-traumatic stress disorder. Marriage counseling worked for them, bucking the high divorce rate within the armed forces, and Burana concludes her memoir on a positive note, having made peace with the army's fallibility and found her own place in it. (Apr.)

A email buddy of mine had mentioned she was reading this book so I went and picked it up and I am so glad I did! I related to a lot in this book ( no, not the stripper part, ha ha ha), but being a military wive for 8 years you do face certain struggles, and many blessings! She writes about the Army, and hubby was in the Marines, but somethings remain the same regardless of the uniform your spouse is wearing.

I am now going to run out and get Lily Burana's other book, she has sass!

I am giving this book 5 stars! Wit woo!

This book falls into these book challenges. 6 months left of the year, think I can finish all my challenges????

Until next time...

The Tudors:

Have you all realized that I am a fan of Historical books? Well the same can be said for movies/t.v shows. My new obession is The Tudors on Showtime. Hot! Hot!

Henry was never intended for the throne of England. However, the death of his older brother Arthur at the age of 15 and his taking of his dead brother's bride, propelled the young prince into the limelight and laid the foundations for one of the most spectacular reigns in English history. The young Henry VIII was an artist, musician, theologian and sportsman — the perfect Renaissance prince — but the failure of his first wife Katherine of Aragon to produce a male heir brought out his darker side. Henry could be cruel and capricious, using arbitrary execution as an instrument of Royal policy. In his bid to produce an heir, he would dismantle the established church in England, loot its posessions, and set himself up as an absolute monarch. By the time of his death, his desire to maintain his own magnificent dynasty had seen him marry six times, deplete the nation's coffers, and cut a swath through the English nobility. Yet a new age had been born in the fires of change and through the years had transformed a Renaissance prince into a sickly, overweight tyrant, his rule marked a sea-change in the fortunes of England.

I am late in getting into this show, so I am not up to date and need to get moving on catching up before the new season starts on the 5th of April. King Baboon and I will do our best to get caught up this week.

You all know the story of King Henry Vlll, see it in an all new light!
5 smoking stars for this series!!!
Plus, added bonus for the fact that Peter O Toole is in a few episodes! I love me some Peter O Toole.

P.S. Have you all noticed this site has gone from just reviewing books, to reviewing movies and shows as well??? All falls into the same group in my eyes, hope you all enjoy!

Until next time...

Beverly Hills Chihuahua: Movie Review

Synopsis

A pampered Chihuahua accustomed to the living the good life in glamorous Beverly Hills must rein in her heiress instincts and rely on the kindness of strangers in order to find her way back home after becoming hopelessly lost in Mexico. Chloe (voice of
Drew Barrymore) is a diamond-clad toy dog who favors traveling in her wealthy owner's purse over frolicking in an open park, and Papi (voice of George Lopez) is the kind of independent pup that she doesn't afford a second glance. When a vacation mishap leaves Chloe stranded in Mexico, the Chihuahua who doesn't speak a lick of Spanish must rely on street-smart German shepherd Delgado (voice of Andy Garcia) to guide her back home before she wanders any further south. Meanwhile, brave Papi races to the border intent on proving his love for Chloe by tracking her down and escorting her home in style. Along the way, Papi is joined by an enthusiastic pack of helpful pooches (voices of Luis Guzman, Plácido Domingo, and Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo) a pair of concerned humans (Piper Perabo and Manolo Cardona), an anxious iguana (voice of Paul Rodriguez), and a crafty rat (voice of Cheech Marin). -

We rented this movie for family movie night. 'D' got to pick it out. We got all the kids their bowls of popcorn, their juice and a candy they got to pick out at the store. The second their snacks were gone, so were they! Turds!

King Baboon and I sat and watched the whole thing. It was cute, although also creepy. I have issues when they make animals start talking and movie their mouths, it's just not right!

I wish I could tell you the boys review on it, but they would not be honest because they didn't watch more than 1/2 of it! Therefore King Baboon and I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars!

Hey Punky Monkey's, I want my money back from the cost of this show, since you all flaked on your parents! Is this a sign of things to come?
Until next time...

Nights In Rodanthe: Movie Review

Synopsis

In the romantic drama '
Nights in Rodanthe,' based on the Nicholas Sparks best-selling novel, Diane Lane stars as Adrienne Willis, a woman with her life in chaos, who retreats to the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her -- a wayward husband who has asked to come home, and a teenaged daughter who resents her every decision.Almost as soon as Adrienne gets to Rodanthe, a major storm is forecast and Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) arrives. The only guest at the inn, Flanner is not on a weekend escape but rather is there to face his own crisis of conscience. Now, with the storm closing in, the two turn to each other for comfort and, in one magical weekend, set in motion a life-changing romance that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives.

King Baboon and I rented this movie this weekend. I had already read the book by Nicholas Sparks when it first came out, so I knew the story line, and like always I went into the movie certain it wouldn't hold a flame to the book. Well... needless to say... I was right. Surprised?!?! Ha, you shouldn't be! HE HE HE!

It's not to say it wasn't a good movie, just not up to pare with the book. I love Richard Gere and Diane Lane. They work wonderfully together and they are a believeable couple. Was just missing something for me.

I will give this movie 3 out of 5 stars!
But.... BUT.... Richard Gere gets a 5 out of 5 stars on his kisses. Man he just puts his whole self into them!
Until next time...

Relationship Rescue: Review

Relationship Rescue by Dr Phillip McGraw

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com ReviewAs a follow-up to his bestselling book
Life Strategies, Oprah acolyte Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D., moves from aiding the aimless individual to coaching the disconnected couple. McGraw has distilled his more than two decades of counseling experience into a seven-step strategy he calls "Relationship Rescue."

"I'm prepared to kick a hole in the wall of the pain-ridden, unhappy maze you've gotten yourself into, and provide you clear access to action-oriented answers and instructions on what you must do to have what you want," says Dr. Phil. His aim is to expose and eliminate the saboteurs that cause senseless damage to already-fragile marriages, and, like an emotional root canal, to replace them with values he says provide positive results. If you follow Dr. Phil's strategy, he will lead you on a precise journey to uncover your heart and then share it with your partner as part of taking the "risk of intimacy."

Dr. Phil leads you to "reconnect with your core" in the first five steps of his seven-step strategy. By no means a quick fix, there are in-depth and rigorous questionnaires, surveys, tests, and profiles that require a "brutally candid" mindset, with such fill-in-the-blanks as "List five things that today would make you fall out of love with your partner." With this internal work accomplished, you'll then move on to reconnecting with your partner during a two-week, half-hour-a-day short course. As a "dyad," you and your loved one take turns giving monologues on topics such as "The most positive thing I took away from my mother and father's relationship was..."

Once the "reconnection" has been established, Dr. Phil says the work shifts to a management role, as relationships are always a work in progress. Dr. Phil humorously refers to his own marriage throughout the book, sharing his mishaps and victories in learning to accept and enjoy what he sees as fundamental but complementary differences between men and women. --John Youngs
From Publishers Weekly

Oprah's relationship expert and the author of the hugely popular Life Strategies, McGraw offers a challenge to readers in troubled marriages. (Though he refers to "relationships," his comments about the roles of men and women make it obvious that McGraw has mostly traditional marriages in mind.) With typical frankness, the Dallas psychologist declares that the underlying reason that "your relationship is in trouble [is] because you set it up that way." Traditional relationship counseling doesn't work, McGraw says, so he dares readers to follow his multistep plan for "reconnecting," which demands honest exploration, through exhaustive self-tests and questionnaires designed to define each partner's needs and expectations. The last step of McGraw's program is probably the most difficult and rewarding: 14 days of structured reconnection exercises in which the partners share their deepest feelings. By participating with the required level of commitment, candor and seriousness, couples would seem to guarantee enhancing their relationships. Despite the strengths of his program, McGraw's compelling television presence doesn't translate well to the page. He reminds readers so often that the "reconnecting" process will not be easy or fun that at times he seems more hectoring than persuasive--not that this is likely to matter to his viewers and fans. One-day laydown on February 8; television and radio satellite tours. (Feb.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Okay, we all know you would have to live under a rock to not know who Dr. Phil is, and to know how he works. He is in your face, he doesn't care if it hurts, he is going to say what you need to hear whether you like it or not. I needed this kind of in your face lessons. It's true one must look at themselves first before they ask everyone else around them to change. Looking at myself has never been an easy thing to do. Hey, I am a work in progress.

I give this book 4 stars

This book falls into these challenges:

The Five Love Languages: Review

The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman

Amazon.com ReviewUnhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.
How do you discover your spouse’s – and your own – love language? Chapman’s short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (
an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like –hoping the feelings of affection will follow later– a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby.

Product Description

Are you and your spouse speaking the same language? While love is a many splendored thing, it is sometimes a very confusing thing, too. And as people come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes, so do their choices of personal expressions of love. But more often than not, the giver and the receiver express love in two different ways. This can lead to misunderstanding, quarrels, and even divorce. Quality Time Words of Affirmation Gifts Acts of Service Physical TouchDr. Gary Chapman identifies five basic languages of love and then guides couples towards a better understanding of their unique languages of love. Learn to speak and understand your mate's love language, and in no time you will be able to effectively love and truly feel loved in return. Skillful communication is within your grasp!

I have learned so much from this book, as well as King Baboon ( my hubby). We knew we loved each other, faced a hard moment in our relationship, and the end was looming in our faces. We are fighting those demons, because we love each other and our determined to make our marriage work. Although we both know we loved each other, we were giving each other the wrong kind of love. He was giving me the love he knew, the love he wanted, and I was doing the same. Now that I know what fills his love tank, and he knows what fills mine, we are back to what's really important... each other!

I give this book 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars! Pick this book up, even if you are in what you and your spouse believe to be a solid relationship, our relationships are always in a need of a tune up.

This book falls into these challenges:

After reading the copy from the library I ran out and bought it, and that says a lot because I have trained myself not to buy many books from the bookstore, we would go broke if I did!
